Legal Question in Traffic Law in Maryland

unregistered vehicle

I work in an apartment complex in Maryland and I drive my car there every day to haul tools and material. The vehicle is unregistered and never leaves the property. Recently, while driving in the apartment complex, a police officer pulled me over and cited me for driving an unregistered vehicle and not wearing a seat belt. Any suggestions?

Re: unregistered vehicle

I'm not sure that you are required to register that vehicle. I think you probably have a good chance of winning your case or at least getting the registration charge dropped. I do recommend that you get a lawyer who specializes in handling this type of case in Prince George's County, such as myself. If you wish to speak with me about this case, you can email me at the address included.

Please note, however, that this information cannot be considered legal advice until you have had time to consult with an attorney, nor does it create a lawyer-client relationship.

Re: unregistered vehicle

There may be an argument to dismiss the charges if the roadway where you were stopped is private property and not a public thoroughfare (e.g., a parking lot). However, if you admitted to the officer that you had entered this area from a public road, that could be admitted as a statement against interest. Did they bring routine traffic charges or criminal charges (in other words, are they seeking jail time)? Our firm handles traffic and criminal cases in Maryland.
