docked pay for damaged merchandise

Is it legal for a small business owner to hold an employee financially responsible for merchandise that is accidentally damaged while that employee is working?

It depends. If you were the only one there at the time, and he thinks you did it, he may be ok. If it happened while you were off duty, he has a problem. It depends on the facts.
