Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

Collection agency wants payment for father's debt

My father incurred an expense which we found out wasn't covered by his medical insurance ($5500). He died but I was still making timely payments on the bill. The debt is now at $3300. I stopped getting invoices from the company and now it's at a collection agency. The collection agency says they won't accept payments and want the balance in full, which I cannot afford. Is this debt mine now when it was originally my father's and if so, can it hurt my credit? What can I do?

Re: Collection agency wants payment for father's debt

If you are not obligated by contract to pay the bill and were only paying this bill incurred by your father out of a sense of duty, then it cannot harm your credit standing. If you are serving as guarantor and your father defaulted on this debt, it could hurt you, but you would have to have signed something describing your obligations as a guarantor.
