Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

Ex owes me money

I was engaged to a man that got himself in trouble and ended up going to prison. I paid for his attorney fees. He wrote me a ''promissory note'' that states he will pay me back for all money put towards attorneys (there is no amount listed in this note he wrote). He is getting out of prison in August 2007. If he does not pay me can I sue him? He also talked about claiming bankruptcy. If so, does that mean he won't have to pay me? Does bankruptcy cover promissory notes? Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated!!
