Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

Two-year old medical claim from Collection agency

Recently, a collection agency sent me a letter regarding an unpaid medical bill from January 2001 for $490. The dermatologist has since gone out of business. I have records of two claims from my insurance company that asked for further information regarding the claims. The dermatologist never sent additional information to the insurance company and the bills went unpaid. Now, I do not have access to medical records from the dermatologist to show the insurance company. And, this collection agency continues to send notices that say I've avoided them. I've been in touch with them several times and tried to work this out with my insurance company. I don't know what to do next. Please help! Thank you very much!

Re: Two-year old medical claim from Collection agency

The nest step would be to write a letter to the collection agency requesting verification of the debt (the collection letter you received should have instructions on it as required by federal law). The agency will then not be allowed to attempt further collection until the verification is provided to you. Verification may include account records, but probably would not include medical information. If you have further questions, please contact me at www.lawgreg.com
