In a civil suit in which there co-defendants is it possible for one defendant to win and the other lose?

Sure. The only way it would be impossible for one defendant to win and the other to lose, is if their liability was joint. If they have individual actions or allegations of negligence, one could be negligent or in breach of a contract while the other may not owe a duty or may have not done anything wrong.
