Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

Not valid complaints

I received three letters from my apartment complex. The first one states that my rent was late in December. I received this letter Monday. The other two are complaints that are not valid, one was a noise complaint that as not from my apartment nor were they my quest and the second was of leaving trash in the hallway, which I only do when I am literally getting ready to leave my apartment, meaning that I have placed it outside my door and my front door is still open. I only want the late fee dropped and the complaints removed. How do I go about getting this done. Oh, and they want the money for the late fee today- 3/24/09 and I never received a late fee letter until Monday.

Re: Not valid complaints

Send them a letter certified mail return receipt requested discussing your issues. Dispute the late fee in this writing indicating that you will pay the late fee by a certain date. Sign and date the letter. Keep a copy for your records.

In this manner you will lay the foundation for your defense should the landlord ever decide to take you to court, and should the landlord ever try to give you a negative referral.
