Legal Question in Traffic Law in Michigan

Jurisdiction

I got a ticket for disobeying a stop sign. This stop sign is located at the end of my street. The road I turned onto was called 14 Mile, which seperates two cities. My question was: If the stop sign was facing my city (on my city property), is there anyway a cop from the other city give me a ticket; even though I was turing on the street that splits the two cities? Does the other city have the jurisdiction to stop me if the intial crime did not happen in there city, or does jurisdiction not matter because i turned on the street the cities both share?

Re: Jurisdiction

I really need to see the scene were the alleged violation occured. There certainly may be a great defense like you have suggested. Additionally, if I am reading your question correctly and guessing right, you will be in either Farmington or Bloomfield Hills District Court. I practice in those two courts on a weekly basis. I am friends with the prosecutors and can help you! Please call me at the office (248) 737-7000 or toll free (800)LAW-6685 24 hours a day. Best wishes!

Re: Jurisdiction

A police officer from one jurisdiction may enforce the STATE laws on a border line street. There are 2 relevant questions. First, are you charged with violating the STATE law as opposed to the city ordinance? Second, is the failure to stop for a stop sign on a side street an offense on a "border" street when that intersection is at a "border" street? I don't think it is; however, I know of no case on point. Call my office if you are interested in having us represent you. The other courts you could be in are Royal Oak and Clawson or Troy. I, too am familiar with all of the courts in Oakland County. John C. Talpos )http://www.Mich-Lawyer.com)
