Is it illegal for a commuting student to have a weapon within their vehicle and does it matter whether is possess ammunition.

Whether or not the weapon is loaded determines whether or not the weapon, as discovered, is a deadly weapon. In other words, a gun without bullets is not deadly.

Whether or not a gun is loaded and, therefore, deadly can matter depending on the state you're in and what the laws are there. As for carrying a gun in the vehicle, it depends on the state you're in. Once you cross a state line, you voluntarily subject yourself to the laws of that state and its jurisdiction. If you were charged with something, you need to contact a criminal defense lawyer in the state that brought the charges against you.

Your question will depend on the state you are refering to. If you are in MS, you need to have a concealed weapons permit to carry a gun, unless you fall into one of the express exceptions/circumstances. You must also realize that a University is an exception to the rule as well because of the federal dollars etc. You will get into twice the trouble for being on University soil.
