Legal Question in Family Law in Mississippi

Child in our temporary kinship custody

We are ''temporary'' guardians of our now 8-year-old niece. The court date has been put off now three times. She is not a behavior problem, but I am not in good health. Everyone is acting as if we have forever and the parents are paying little to no child support. We are waiting for the mother to get out of rehab and pay the Ad Litem attorney to start work to see who gets custody of this precious child. Do we have any rights at all? Can we request a speedy trial?

Do we have any rights at all?

What you are referring to is generally of a criminal nature. This is a civil case.

Can we request a speedy trial?

Family law matters are seldom resolved quickly. Also, it sounds like someones parental rights may be terminated. A decision like this can have life-long effects. Far better to take the time to make sure this is all done in the best interest of the child.
