I am getting a divorce in NJ and would like to know if it is true that you have to be separated for 6 months before you get a court date? Also regarding alimony, I make more than him and he has been told that I may have to pay him alimony? How long does alimony last?

You do not even need to be separated to get a divorce. Under "irreconcilable differences", even people living in the same house can get divorced. As you your question concerning alimony, it depends on so many circumstances, that it would be impossible to answer here. There is an alimony statute that has a number of factors that a judge is required to consider when making a determination as to the amount of alimony and the length of time. Only an experienced family law attorney could give you an opinion on that issue.

Keep in mind that this advice is given based on the little bit of information that you have provided in your question. My advice may change based on other information. Further, no one can rely on advice from an attorney who has not been retained. You cannot rely on this advice because we have not personally met and you have not retained me as an attorney. If you have not already done so, you should immediately meet with a Family Law attorney for a full consultation before you take any further steps. Good luck! Rob Gleaner
