If the lease is well drafted, it contains a requirement that the premises be used only as the residence of the named tenants.

even without a written lease the commercial use of the rented residential premises is likely a violation of a local ordinance so it would subject the resident to eviction if not corrected.

NO. I would need to see your written lease to be sure, and I may have to look at the town's regulations on this, but the chances are very very good that the tenant is wrong on this and must stop.
