For an adult the maximum jail sentence for simple assault is six months in jail. Generally, first

offenders who are adults do not go to jail if found guilty of simple assault as a first offender.

A sixteen year old is deemed to be subject to Juvenile Court and can spend time in detention

if found guilty, but generally a first offender would receive probation at worst and might be able to have his conviction dismissed following six or twelve months of good behavior following conviction or a guilty plea.
