Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey

Can our landlord evict us?

My husband & I have lived in the same apt. for the past 17 years, there have been two owners, the owner that is the landlord now, for past 11 years says she wants yto take us to court to evict us. Weve had an on going problem trying to get her to make repairs, one wal in kitchen is totally fallen apart from water damage, thats just one thing out of many. We wre in cort with her husband with our city housing authories two years ago, her husband passed away, and we didnt pursue her about the problems through the housing dept. My husband is ill, hes 53, Ive been housboud with sickness for 6 yrs, we wrote a letter telling her we wont be sending any more rent payments until she does the repairs which are many years in nee of fixing. there is one more apt above us in the whole building, shes been remodelig it for months over our heads, its been empty for 3 years, we were her only income from apts here, now shes ready to rent that newly fixed up apt and wants to kick us out, weve done othig wrong except stick up for ourselves, can she do this to us? we have no lease, she says shes going to say I wouldnt let her in to do repairs. thank you Ps do I need to reply to her letter?

Re: Can our landlord evict us?

I CAN SUGGEST THAT YOU CAN CONTACT LEGAL SERVICES IN YOUR COUNTY. IF YOU QUALIFY FINANCIALLY, THEY WILL ASSIGN A LAWYER TO REPRESENT YOU. THIS IS VERY SERIOUS. THERE IS CASE LAW THAT PROTECTS YOU. THE LANDLORD MUST FIX THE APARTMENT WHERE IT IS NOT HABITABLE.
