Legal Question in Social Security Law in New Jersey

Saving money for your children from survivor benefits

My husband passed away in 2001. Since then, I have worked a full time retail job and my son has collected survivor benefits. I have saved money for him to go to college (not nearly enough enough for one year's tuition at a community college, but still I did save it for him) Now that he is turning 18, Social Security has sent a letter asking me to return all monies I have saved for him. There goes college and all my hard work and our sacrifices over the past few years.

What's up with that? They just take it back and he never sees it again? It makes me feel that I scrimped and saved for the past 5 years for nothing. Absolutely nothing.

My question is: is there any recourse? does my son get it back? what is the sense behind this?

Re: Saving money for your children from survivor benefits

I would be happy to discuss further withyou. You are leaving something very important out of your question-what reason was given for asking you to pay them back?? Regardless of the reason, it can be appealed. Do not do anything(especially sending them money) without consulting an attorney
