Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New Jersey

My aunt passed away, no will, only heirs are 16 nieces and nephews. She has a bank account with a zero balance. Am I required to notify bank and close the account? It's been 3 months and she's still getting bank statments (0 balance). I have no legal standing other than as her niece.

You could let the bank know that she died.

Did your aunt own anything when she died? If she did, then someone needs to take charge to deal with her assets.

You are pretty close to my law office. Why don't you call me, and we can talk it over? no charge for the telephone call.

I agree with Bob. She might have had other assets, like personal property, jewelry, etc. If so, one of the family should apply to be Administrator of her estate to liquidate the assets and distribute the proceeds.
