Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Electric Meter

I received a letter from our electric company stating that our meter had become defective sometime after 5-18-06 & replaced the old with a new meter on 4-30-07. I then received a bill for $586.92 from our previous usage patterns. I don't know if their assumptions of how much we would owe is correct & are we liable because their equiptment was faulty & not noticed for a year? We had been paying our buget payments for that total of time.

Re: Electric Meter

Disputing electric company charges: In New York State, the standard provcedure is as follows: you must first contact the electric company and see if they can work together with you to arrive at some sort of satisfactory compromise.

If this does not work, then with regard to electricity and some other types of utilities, you can file a complaint with the Public Services Commission of the New York State Department of Public Services. (They have a website with contact infomation adn lists of their offices at various locations.) If you disagree with the Public Services Comission's initial decision you get two opportunities to appeal twice to the Public Services Commission, the first appeal within fifteen days of the Public Services Commission's initial decision against you and then another fifteen days after the Public Services Commission's second decision against you.

If the matter is still not resolved to your satisfaction you can go to court to sue both the electric company and the Public Services Commission in the hope of obtaining a court verdict in your favor.
