Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

fingerprinting backround investigation

9 years ago I had a domestic despute with my husband, he tried to pull me down a flight of stairs, so I picked a a stick and hit him with it. Before he had me on the stairs I called 911 they came to late so I had to defend myself, when they came they saw he had a cut. They came in took me in handcuffs and booked me, the charges were dismissed. I'm now applying for a federal job that needs a backround will this hurt my chances or being it was dismissed will it be ok?

Thank you

I don't know that this will hurt you. However, the fact that you have fingerprints on file might lead to a "hit" with respect to the database they are searching. Even still, this may not be a problem.

If the case was really dismissed, you may be eligible to have your fingerprints and other records purged. You might want to look into this remedy so that you don't have to ask these questions in the future.

Re: fingerprinting backround investigation

This should not affect you. Alot however depends on the job you are applying for.Criminal conviction is not a bar to government job. In your case you were not convicted. If you are applying for a job as supervisor of day care in a federal building you might come under more serious scrutiny . A law enforcement job might also put you under more serious scrutiny.A job as a secretary or accountant will not command the same level of scutiny. From what you disclosed I dont think you will have a problem getting hired. Be honest and explain all the circumstances. You will be asked to produce a disposition so get one ready. Good luck
