Depending on what you filed and where it may or may not be available online, but for most popular petitions/applications you would go to www.uscis.gov and then click "check case status" in the lower right corner. Enter the filing receipt number and you should get an indication of whether your filing is pending, approved or denied. If you have trouble getting a response or if your petition/application has been pending for a longer period that what USCIS claims to be normal processing time, you may want to schedule an appointment through Infopass (also on the same USCIS website) to speak to an immigration officer in person about your filing.
