Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

I gave my previous landlord notice that I was not interested in renewing my lease and that my roommate was interested in renewing under his name. I never signed a renewal and the landlord was accepting rent payments from my roommate from his personal bank account. Two years later that landlord is trying to sue me for unpaid rent that my roommate owes, long after I moved out. Does the landlord have a right to come after me?
