Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Renters Nightmare

I spent a year in NY living with friends. When I moved in, I was told that the one friend would help me out until I could get one my feet. I ran into a bad patch and did not find stable work for much of my time there and he wanted repayment for the entire duration of my stay. I always paid him when I could and that was fine until I was moving back to FL. He made me sign a document claiming that I owed him an amount that I did not actually agree with, but he was all I had and did not wish for violence so I signed it. Now he is threatening legal action if I do not pay him. There was never a lease or any firm agreement in writing and he only forced me to sign and notarize a document once he found out I was moving. He didn't even own the house. It belonged to his ex-wife. Even if I did sign a document and have it notarized against my will, does he still have legal recourse?
