Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Visitors not allowed to stay over?

Hi, I have a pretty standard lease, 3 bedroom apartment, 3 names on the lease. My landlord has been complaining that one of our boyfriends says over too often. She says if he is going to stay over he has to be on the lease and pay her rent. She mentioned something about insurance. To me, it seems like if we are paying our rent for the apartment we should be allowed to have visitors. I don't have a copy of the lease handy or I'd look up if it says anything about this. She keeps track of when he comes and goes, watches out the window, etc (she lives in the same house).

Thank you.

Re: Visitors not allowed to stay over?

How often is your visitor over? 1 night a week? 2 nights? or 5 or 6 nights. While a standard lease permits visitors, once a person is basically moved in, that falls outside the "Visitor zone" and the landlord can make certain demands regarding the frequent visitor. As it has an effect not only on insurance, but also usage of utilities, water, parking, garbage and other finite resources involved in residential living.
