what are the rules/laws about having a roomate in a co-op?

The rule on having a roommate is largely dependent upon the condo bylaws. I suggest you check with your condo board. If the condo board is indecisive in the interpretation of the bylaws, please contact me to schedule a review.

I agree with Allen. Start by reviewing the Co-op By-Laws and any rules forming a part of the Co-op

documents. Questions can be raised of the Board Secretary or other officers, or brought up at a meeting.

There usually are no rules regarding roommates in coops where the owner resides in the apartment. If you are renting you are limited by the lease and the proprietary lease and by the law of NY State which allows a renter one roommate no matter what the leases say.
