Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in North Carolina

I live in Raleigh, NC. My girlfriend is in a lease with a roommate that ends on March 23rd, 2011. The lease requires a 60 day notice to vacate be given. The issue is that my girlfriends roommate, who is also on the lease, says she isn't sure what she wants to do and refuses to sign the lease. My girlfriend does absolutely not want to stay past the end of the date but the office is saying that unless both roommates sign, she will still be responsible, even after 03/23. What legal options does she have saying she is trying to give notice?

Without researching this question and without seeing the lease, I would still immediately give written notice that she does not intend to renew the lease and will be vacating. Then leave at the end of the lease. If the lease is silent on the issue, I don't see how they can require notice from both parties. If the lease does say that both tenants need to terminate for termination to be effective, then I am not sure but from a practical standpoint, I would still leave and let them try to come after me.
