Legal Question in Consumer Law in Pennsylvania

Debt collection

Is there a statute of limitations on a lease for an apartment I rented in 1993. I moved before the end of the lease, because my husband and I separated an I could not pay the rent. I recently recieved a letter stating that I must pay the remainder of the lease or be subject to legal action and adverse reporting on my credit history. This is the first time I have been contacted, and the lease was almost 14 years ago. Is this legal?

Re: Debt collection

When did the lease end? In other words, when did you move out of the property? The SOL would be 4 years from the end of the lease.

You should have an attorney respond with a letter. Proceeding while knowing full well that the statute of limitations has expired could expose the landlord to actions by you against him/her.

Under NO circumstances should you call the people you got a letter from yourself. You may be tricked into admitting something, that would cause you to be liable for the debt.
