Dear LawGuru Team

I am a Pakistani citizen and married to US citizen (who is originally from Pakistan). We both married in Pakistan as per Islamic law. Now we both separated and at a point that marriage is not salvageable. I am going to file the divorce from Pakistan. Wondering do i need to register it here in usa and what will be the procedure.

Under the laws of Pennsylvania if Pakistan says you're married you're married. If you spouse is living in the United States you have file in the county where the other spouse lives.

Why one your spouse is a US citizen so you need to file in a court that has personal jurisdiction over your spouse. The Pakistani courts do not. So you have to file the divorce in the county of residence of your spouse.
