Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

My sister was at work when her daughter notified her grandmother that the mom's boyfriend had struck her. So the police notified my sister instructed her to pick her kids up from the grandmother's house. When my sister arrived she found out that her kids had been taken to the ER for scrathes on the face, even though the police that arrived on the scence had the children checked out. The hospital staff treated my sister child without her permisission, they didn;t even notify or call her. And once she found out were her kids were and visited the hospital was told that the kids were going to be released to the grandmother not the mom because the children were afraid they would get a spanking when they got home. Has my sisiter's rights been violated? Instruction were already given by the police officer for her to pick up her kids.????

Regrettably, many people rely on what police say or do, but in a domestic relations context, the police have little authority and should never be giving out advice. Your sister should consult with an attorney in her area, but I it does not sound as though her reliance on the police will be sufficient grounds to prove her case.
