Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

I live with my boyfriend and we have declared domestic partnership through his employer. We also don't correct people if they refer to us as husband and wife. If the relationship ends, what do I need to do and do I qualify for any compensation like a married couple?

1. Have paperwork documentation that you are married. Such as - car insurance, health insurance, lease, anniversary cards from him that say "to my wife" and file your taxes as married. You need to be on documents (some that he filled out) that show "husband/wife".

2. Go to the courthouse and fill out a Declaration ad Registration of Informal Marriage" -- it's cheaper than a marriage license and immediate.

Be aware in Texas that 2 years after you separate the burden to prove a marriage is very difficult since it is presumed that you did not intend a marriage. So if you separate, you need to immediately file for a divorce.
