Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

Probelm with a Creditor

Here's the problem I was evicted from an apartment complex. I turned in my key's and gave the manager of the complex a forwarding address where htey could reach me for the amount that I owed them. In a total of 3 years I heard nothing then suddenly in the mail I recieve a letter with intent to litigate from some debt collector. What kind of legal recourse do I have to stop the litigation. I'm not in the business of not paying my bills but this debt collection company has become non-cooperative in letting me pay the amount down because they sya since it was faulted for that long they can not help in letting me make payments and are demanding payment in full which I can not afford. I would also like to know if there's anything I can do if I dispute the amount that they say I owe since I have never recieved a statement of what I owe for and I really don't know this company what if they defraud me if I do pay.
