Duress Defense to Forgery Charges

In WI, the penalties for passing a forged check are the same for the person passing it as they are for the forger; long prison sentences are possible for either. Duress, however, which means doing something under a threat of criminal harm, is a long recognized defense. If you were the victim of duress, you are the victim of a crime and should report it to authorities. However, if you did not promptly report if, you may have trouble later on convincing anyone that it really happened. I cannot advise you in this matter unless I represent you. You should therefore retain an experienced criminal (felony) lawyer as soon as possible.
