Legal Question in Family Law in India

I married a girl 10 years back.I was 23 and she was 19.the marriage was never registered. It lasted barely for 6 months.She moved out and has not been in touch for last 10 years.now I have met someone with whom I want to settle down.I had applied for my passport during the 6 month period that I was married. And added the girls name in my passport. They did not ask for a marriage certificate then. Now I want to get married and also want to take my new wife outside India on dependent visa for which I need to get earlier one's name removed.some years back when I consulted a lawyer I was told that a divorce is not necessary as it was never registered.
