Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Alabama

Unclaim Property Belonging To My Father

My Father passed away in 2002 and left no will for his children. We receive a phone call in 2007 from relatives stating my Father has property in Stockton, AL. My Father's cousin was paying property taxes on the property, but now she is decease. We were told to come and handle this matter concerning my Father's property. Where do I start?

Get a lawyer in Alabama that handles either real estate law OR trust and estates work. Retain him or her to help you determine what lands you have an interest in, what the state of the title is, whether there are any other interested parties, and what needs to happen for title to clear in your name so you can do with it what you like.

That's just a start. The lawyer you hire will be able to guide you more aptly.

If he died in AL, you'll have to file a probate action there. If he died in CA it will be filed here, get an attorney to help you here. Contact an AL probate attorney either way, because regardless where he died, you'll need help there in getting title.
