Legal Question in Technology Law in Arizona

Questinable WWW Advertising Methods

There are numerous websites that advertise by putting a shortcut to their sites via desktop shortcuts. Although I am curious as to how they have access to a user's desktop, I am more interested in the legal factors.

Re: Questinable WWW Advertising Methods

I've been on the web a long time, and I have yet to see a website download something to my desktop that I haven't somehow invited in.

If a site is using a button to install something on your desktop, it could either be a hidden program attached to something you DID intend to install (such as AOL or an ad-supported browser or download manager). Alternatively, it could have been put there by something you clicked on a website unintentionally.

Check your software installations and run a good virus checker. Keep up with security patches and check out google groups to see if anyone else has encountered that problem. Chances are someone has.

If there's a program with various files that carry the same date as the desktop icon, that's probably your culprit.

Your only real recourse, since no damage was done apparently, is to delete the offending program and contact the website and complain.
