Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Arizona

Recovering cost of education from somebody who has left the USA.

Typical story... I paid for my girlfriend's education and she left without warning within a few months of receiving her degree. She left a letter in which said she would repay what I spent on her education, but it's now 15 months later and I've seen nothing. She does not respond to email queries on the matter, so I'm guessing that legal action is my only option.

Complicating factors: (1) I live in Arizona and she was educated here, but I believe she has since returned to her family home in Canada. (2) I shredded the letter in which she stated she would repay the loan.

Is there any hope of recovering what she said she would repay?

Thanks

Your only chance is to sue her. Ultimately, a jury would decide if the money was a gift or a loan.

Even if you win the lawsuit, you might have problems collecting if she is in Canada. How much money is at stake?
