If you came to USA lawfully on a visa, have never been ordered deported and your future spouse is a US citizen, yes, you can apply for a work permit and residency after marriage - provided you are otherwise admissible.
If you came to USA illegally (without a visa), the answer will depend on whether you are protected under sec. 245i. I suggest, you consult a good immigration lawyer and not a 'notatio' before deciding what to apply for with the USCIS.
