I submitted a "MOTION TO CONTINUE" Pro Per and it was denied... Should it have been a "PETITION"..?

Which is correct..?
A Superior Court Judge denied my "Motion to Continue" and delivered a Judgment ruling... denying my Pro Per "Motion" Someone said it should have be a Petition instead. Correct..?
