Legal Question in Disability Law in California

medical leave from work

My company has a policy that says if you're off on medical leave more than 6 months, you will lose your job and insurance. All this while I'm waiting for treatment for a torn knee. Can my company do this even though I'm doing everything I can? Just waiting on doctors to get surgery started or whatever they will do. Have been at this company 18 yrs.
