my school is trying to charge me an hourly rate for time missed while being seen by a physician for my diagnosis of multiple sclerosis

I assume you are an employee with a certain number of sick days. Try to get them to allow partial days to be deducted. It would seem not unreasonable that at a certain point they would deduct time lost from your salary.

??? Your 'school'?? Schools generally have no authority to 'charge' for anything like that. Now your 'employer' can make you take unpaid time off or charge credit against your accrued leave time.
