It's illegal -- murder, actually -- but it is said that doctors do it all the time.

Well, it's not murder, but it's a felony nevertheless. Penal Code section 401 says "Every person who deliberately aids, or advises, or encourages another to commit suicide, is guilty of a felony." The punishment is prescribed by Penal Code section 18 and appears to be from 16 months to three years imprisonment.
