Re: unemployment compensation
I do not think the government cares whether it is an earned benefit or not. Many people never fully recover the amount of money they pay into Social Security.
You should call the Department up and ask them. I suspect that it is payable only while you remain employable in California, since the purpose is to held you until you can go back to work. It is to no benefit to the State [i.e., can not tax you] if you are in Italy.
Your employer also has to contribute for you into the system and the percentage rate per employee salaries goes up as there are more claims against the Fund from his employees.
Re: unemployment compensation
I think one of the requirements is that you be looking for work in California. Long before I was a lawyer I was xxemployed in a cyclical business and went through the unemployment-collecting mode for a few months. It seems to me they make you look for work and report on your efforts. If you aren't around, my guess is that you'll be cut off in a few weeks. Among other things, you have to show up at their office to pick up your voucher, don't you?
Re: unemployment compensation
No, you won't. It is payable only to people currently and diligently, full time, seeking work in CA, and filing regular reports swearing they are doing so.
