Legal Question in Bankruptcy in California

Bankruptcy coverage

I am a renter and recently there was a kitchen fire while I was cooking. The damages were over $15,000. I am about to be sued by my landlord's insurance company. Chances are that I will loose in court. This debt added to my current economic wows will ruin me. Should I file for bankruptcy before or after a judgement? And no, I dont have renter's insurance..

Re: Bankruptcy coverage

IT doesn't really matter whether you file before or after the bankruptcy, unless you have assets that the creditor can attach after the judgment.

Re: Bankruptcy coverage

If you were to file bankruptcy, it might make more sense to do so if the lawsuit is filed. That way you can avoid the aggravation of having to hire an attorney, suffer a post-judgment examination, etc. The reason I say "after" is that, perhaps they may not sue, despite their threats. Good luck to you, and stick to non-flammable food.
