Legal Question in Business Law in California

Business start-up

Hi Im a full-time Graphic Designer and Im planning in starting my own

Graphic/Web Design business. I want to start this business while still

working at my full-time job. I want to know if I would be able to register

for a DBA or get an LLC without my current employer finding out about this?

Im not sure if I would have to report to my current employer that I have a

second income. I know that if my boss finds out that I have my own business

on the side, he will let me go. I just want to be safe and keep my full-time

job until my business is stable and gives me enough income to leave my

full-time job.

There are ways to keep it from being obvious, but if you have signed a non-compete agreement you'll need to make sure you're not going to be sued for breaching it. We can advise you on all of this if you wish.

As soon as the employer finds you are competing in business, he'll fire you. You're 'at will' unless you have a contract. It's up to you to limit when and how he finds out. Don't violate any non-compete contract. When you are ready to set up any business, corporate status is the only protection your personal assets will have from creditors. Feel free to contact me when you're ready.
