If you're illegally operating without workers' comp, and you're doing contract work for them, and an employee of yours gets hurt, they would be sued. Operating a business without workers' comp insurance is one of the most insanely stupid things you could do. Give them proof that you have auto and comp insurance. No big deal -- right?
The request for proof of insurance is normal, routine and regular. Your insurance agent is accustomed to providing such proof of coverage to third parties. Have him or her furnish the client with a "certificate of insurance" (or several certificates if different carriers are involved). It's probably a free service, and nothing confidential will be released.
No, but they don't have to hire you.
