Legal Question in Business Law in California

if a competitoir is intentially spreading lies about my company in an affort to hurt my business, is this considered slander or defamation of character and would I have a good legal argument in court?

I believe the usual name for this is "trade libel" and it is something for which you can sue, either for an injunction to prohibit it, or for money damages (which you'll have to prove as to amount by good solid evidence), or both. A possible difficulty is that the 1st Amendment guarantee of free speech will be lurking in the background, and also you may have to plead and prove malice as a factor in your claim.
