Legal Question in Business Law in California

create an advocacy group

i am looking to create a group of consumers in a specific field. the group would be consumers of a single company, and would only exist of the top consumers of that company. the idea being to keep the company from making decisions that would alienate its best customers. i have spoken to many other people who would be involved in the group, and i am going to try to set it up. would i need to file any forms before setting this up? do i need to organize as an npo. i assume that this would not fall under union laws as it does not have to do with employees. any help you could give me in this matter would be much appreciated. thanks

Re: create an advocacy group

this is not the kind of question for which you can get good advice in the context of lawguru.

spend a few dollars and hire an attorney to review just what it is that you want to do, and the best way to do it.

feel free to email me if you want to discuss this in more detail.

Re: create an advocacy group

Interesting idea, but it seems that you plan to use the groups influence, via buying power, to somewhat control what the company does. Am I reading your question correctly?

First, why do you want to organize? Second, why do you want to form a NPO? Do you plan to charge members a fee for their involvement in the group?

I am not certain, based on what you have stated, that you need any more than an association of the buyers, (basically you collaborate to work together), but it really depends on what it is you are trying to accomplish.
