Legal Question in Business Law in California
llc or family business
My husband, his mom, and myself are opening a business. Is an LLC better for us then a family partnership? Lets say someonewanted to sue my mother in law can they come after the entire business, or just her part, or does an LLC protect the business?

These questions should be explored with a business lawyer and an accountant; otherwise, there's a pretty good chance that even if you pick an appropriate entity type, it won't be set up properly.

Yes, you should consider a LLC or Corporation along with other options.

I never allow clients to enter partnerships, because of the risks and liabilities. Any one partner getting sued means all partners are liable. Use an appropriate corporation, based upon what your tax adviser tells you is the best for your business. A corporation protects the shareholders from liability for company debts and damages, and from the personal liabilities of the other shareholders. Once you have that decision of which form of corporation to use, feel free to contact me for the legal help you'll need in doing it right.
