Hi, I'm a small business owner who distributes to local dealers in the state of CA. Business has slowed down drastically & I hardly have dealers placing orders. Would it be illegal if I decided to go on my own (through television advertising) & sell the product at

Your answer will be found by reading your contract with them. It certainly won't be "illegal" to compete with them, but it may subject you to a lawsuit. Consult with an attorney if you can't determine your rights by reading it yourself. Feel free to contact me if you need that.
