If the amount owed is small enough, you can sue in small claims. If not, you will likely need to retain a lawyer. Perhaps the lawyer can take the case on a contingency fee.

Do you have anything in writing from the company saying why they are not paying you? If it's for a non-legitimate reason, you may be able to sue for conversion and recover punitive damages.

You may want to send a letter first to set them up. The letter should include certain statements to get the company to respond. Depending on the amount owed, you should have a lawyer draft it.

Many times people pay when they know a lawyer is involved. Why? Because they know they will be soon paying a lawyer too.

Anyway, feel free to call or email with any further questions.

If you are owed compensation, file a claim with the Labor Commissioner's office. If it is really a substantial amount, consider hiring an attorney to assist you.
