Legal Question in Business Law in California

Product Designs

I was asked to design a logo and product bottle design for a new hair product. I am a recent graphic arts graduate and they liked what I did. They have asked me to submit a bill - is there something I should do legally regarding my designs? They plan to take their product globally.

Re: Product Designs

You already have rights to your design. You need to determine whether they want to treat this as a "for hire" contract or some other type. If you don't retain any rights, then try to get a higher price. But they may simply go elsewhere and do something very similar if they can't reach an agreement with you. I can draft a standard contract for you if you wish.

Re: Product Designs

You're supposed to negotiate your contracts before you do the work, not after. If this was a design for hire, it's their design. If you want to retain ownership and license a design, that's what you have to negotiate. Next time consult with counsel for advice before making legal and business decisions you're unsure about. Feel free to contact me if you get serious about doing these things right.
