if products were ringing for free when scanned at the register are the employees liable for this pricing error

They are certainly obligated to protect the company from harm, including such 'ring' problems they become aware of. They should have immediately stopped and contacted mgmt for directions. Failure to do so would be grounds for discipline or termination. However, charging the employees for the losses would require evidence of 'misconduct' instead of poor judgment and stupidity.
